Jade Buddha Temple
Jade Buddha Temple is a well-trodden and most famous Buddhist temple located on Anyuan Road of Shanghai. In the noisy and modern city of Shanghai, this temple is a good spot to seek quietness and the traditional culture of the city.
The temple has a long history of more than 120 years. In 1882 of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), Master Huigen of Putuoshan Mountain brought in five jade Buddhas from Myanmar, and left behind a seated and a sleeping jade Buddha of Sakyamuni - the founder of Buddhism, when passing through Shanghai. The temple was just built to enshrine the Buddhas. It initially sat in the town of Jiangwan. Later the temple was damaged during the war, and was then rebuilt on the present site in 1918.
Jade Buddha Temple is composed of a screen wall and several majestic halls, following the style of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The temple is most famous for the exquisite jade Buddhas. The seated jade Buddha is enshrined in Yufo Pavilion, while the sleeping Buddha is in Wofo Hall. There is also another larger sleeping jade Buddha in Wofo Hall, which was arranged by Master Zhenchan from Singapore in 1990. In addition, The temple also stores many ancient Buddhist statues, paintings and scriptures.
The temple also houses a religious objects shopping center and a vegetarian restaurant, where visitors can purchase souvenirs and taste the vegetarian food.
