Shanghai Museum

Shanghai Museum is located near the city center at People's Square on Nanjing Road. The Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall are nearby. The museum is one of the four largest in China (The others are in Beijing, Xi'an and Nanjing).
Shanghai Museum was initially built in 1952 and then relocated in 1959. The current facility was completed in 1996. It is designed round atop with a square base symbolizing the traditional Chinese belief that 'the sky is round and the earth is square.' The museum has eleven special galleries and three comprehensive exhibition halls. It features collections of bronzes, chinaware, painting and calligraphy. Other exhibits include seals; coins; lacquers; jade; furniture and minority handicrafts.
The museum also offers excellent services for visitors. There are computers that perform as multilingual interpreters in all the galleries. The crafts shop provides reproductions of cultural relics and many unique souvenirs. Photo catalogs of larger antique pieces are also available in the shop. In addition, the museum also operates an elegant restaurant and a tea house.
