Zhujiajiao Town

Zhujiajiao is a well known water town situated on the shore of brilliant Dianshan Lake, nestled against the boundless Nine Hills. Zhujiajiao, which is sometimes referred to as 'Zhuxi', is one of the four most famous cultural towns of Shanghai. Zhujiajiao boasts a long thousand year history. It began as a small village during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280), and developed into a bazaar during the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368). Owing to its booming businesses, more and more people took up residency until it finally developed into a town in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Zhujiajiao is blessed with a charming landscape similar to that of Venice, Italy. Beautiful, free-flowing rivers run randomly throughout the town, accompanied by the long streets. Dozens of old stone bridges crisscross the picturesque rivers. Long the banks of the rivers stand a thousand ancient local houses in the style of the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. You will greatly appreciate the most natural elements of this town as well as its friendly inhabitants.
As an ancient town, Zhujiajiao has numerous human and cultural sights to offer visitors, many of which are very famous. The most famous attractions include: the Fangsheng Bridge (the largest stone bridge with five openings in Southeast China), the North Street (the first street of Ming and Qing dynasties in Shanghai), the Baoguo Temple (the underlying temple of Jade Buddha Temple), the ancient City God Temple, the Hall of Xi Family, the Memorial Hall of Wang Chang, the large and ancient Kezhi Garden, the elegant and modern Zhuxi Garden, the Three Turnings on the street (Sanyang Wan, Qiaozi Wan and Mituo Wan), the old, mystical and deep lanes among others.
